What is the SAFE Programme? The South West District SAFE Programme aims to make the living environment of our needy elderly safe through the installation of basic safety amenities in their homes by volunteer students from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) West (Balestier).
Who qualifies? The homes are identified and recommended by the Grassroots Organisations or their respective grassroots leaders to the CDC. These homes are selected based on the following criteria: - Tenant must be a resident of South West District
- Tenant must be 55 years or above
- Tenant must be living in a 1 or 2-room flat (3-room flats can be considered on a case-to-case basis)
What will be installed? 3 different types of safety features will be installed.
- Lever Tap at the kitchen
To change the rotating tap head to a lever to reduce strain on hand joints and allows turning on the water with reduced strength. This will particularly benefit elderly with arthritis of the fingers.
- Showerhead and 2-Way Lever Tap in the toilet
Using buckets to bathe is a repetitive bending action that may cause loss of balance and strain on the hand joints. This will again be good for elderly suffering from arthritis.
- Grab bars in the toilet and at the entrance of the toilet
To serve as support when getting up from squatting positions and stepping out of the bathroom. It will also reduce the risk of tripping and falling in the toilet.
Who are our partners?
- ITE West (Balestier)
- Singapore General Hospital (SGH)
