The South West CDC launches energy-saving initiatives to combat climate change.
Did you know that energy consumed by electronic equipment in standby mode can account for up to 10% of your household’s total utility bill?
Or that an air-conditioner consumes 10 times more energy than an electric fan, and energy-saving bulbs use up to 80% less energy than standard light bulbs? To raise awareness of climate change and cultivate energy -saving habits among the residents of South West District, the South West Community Development Council has come up with EcoCommunity @ South West (formerly Clean & Green Living @ South West) to address environmental issues and showcase the achievements in the South West District.
Cool South West! Initiatives
The South West CDC has lined up three key initiatives:
- Change-A-Bulb @ South West
This programme aims to raise awareness and encourage adoption of energy-saving habits as a means to curb climate change. In this initiative, residents are encouraged to switch to energy-saving light bulbs in their homes.
The project started with two blocks in the district early this year. Subsequently, it will roll out to other Residents’ Committees in Hong Kah North and the rest of the distric - Switch Off! @ South West
Residents are encouraged to switch off electrical appliances at the mains when these are not in use.
- 25ºC Campaign @ South West (Optimum Air Con temperature)
Raising the temperature by just one degree from 24 to 25 degrees for an average household air conditioner running for eight hours a day can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 470kg a year and shave off $170 the annual utility bill.
Cool South West! Initiatives are co-organised by the National Environment Agency (South West Regional Office), the Hong Kah North Grassroots Organisations and the Climate Change Organisation.
