Are you a good storyteller?
"Stories from Home" is a contest calling for heartwarming stories and art pieces that portray your memorable family experiences. You can pen your entries in various languages and through art or stories.

Attractive prizes are up for grabs. And, the winning entry and selected stories will be compiled into the first-ever South West District Family Book which will be distributed district-wide.

FAMREAD CARNIVAL 2007 @ SOUTH WEST
– READ TO BOND, BOND TO LOVE


Themed “Read To Bond, Bond To Love”, the FAMRead Carnival 2007 @ South West is a pro-family programme organised in partnership with the National Library Board (NLB) and National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS), to engage families in stories and its values as a means of interaction, learning and bonding. 

The FAMRead Carnival 2007 @ South West will be held on Sunday, 16 September 2007 at The Frontier Community Club and Jurong West Community Library for 3,000 residents and families.

OBJECTIVES

The FAMRead Carnival 2007 @ South West aims to:

  1. Promote reading as a means of family bonding and communications;
  2. Enhance literacy level in the families and community;
  3. Create a platform for the community to express their love for their family through literacy and artistic expressions; and
  4. Create a family-friendly South West District.


HIGHLIGHTS

Pre-Event Highlights

(A)              Launch of ‘Stories from Home’ Contest

‘Stories from Home’ is an inaugural contest for the community to submit stories on their family life and experiences in their preferred language and form, including illustrations, short stories and poems.  Winning and selected entries will be compiled in the 1st South West District FamStoryBook and distributed district-wide.  The proposed categories are:

(B)              Read with Your Family Day!
Adapted from the annual “Eat With Your Family Day”, the pro-family programme is targeted at corporate partners with a twist, where half a working day is earmarked for staff to read with their children at their workplace.  To facilitate, fringe activities could be organised to prepare and lead the families in their reading.

(C)              Read from the Heart! Session
To encourage corporate partners to adopt reading as part of their corporate social responsibility, training session(s) will be organised to equip volunteering staff with reading and mentoring skills to perform their role as reading buddies to needy children in the South West District.


Event Highlights
                                                      
(A)              Launch of ‘Stories from Home’ Book – FamStoryBook @ South West cum Mass FAMRead Session
The first edition of stories from home will be launched –FamStoryBook @ South West – with a mass family reading session of shortlisted stories. The FamStoryBooks will be distributed district-wide – community venues such as the schools, community clubs, libraries and family service centres as well as corporate partners. 

(B)              Attempt to Create a New Singapore Record for Most Number of People Participated in a Mass Reading
The South West CDC wishes to create a new Singapore Record for the Most Number of People Participating in a Mass Reading. This will be one of the new records to be created since 2005. Some of the records created were ‘The Biggest Birthday Card’, ‘Most Palm Well Wishes Collected’, among others.

(C)              FAMRead Book Fair
A community-for-community book fair will be held with two key highlights: donation of used books collected from the community and corporate partners to needy residents and sale of books at community rate and special promotions.  The donation by corporation partners – Donate-A-Book serves to engage the staff in community service within their means.

(D)              ‘Read to Bond, Bond to Love’ Poetry Slam! Recitation
For the first time, poetries that illustrate the significance of family life will be recited and shared with the community.  Winning poets will be judged based on their creativity and relevance to the theme.

The FAMRead Carnival 2007 @ South West hopes to bring the love of reading to the community through different form of literary expressions and encourage family to take up reading as one of bonding tools.
