ETHNIC HERITAGE @ SOUTH WEST

Are your roots are in the South West District - Jurong, Chua Chu Kang, Telok Blangah and Clementi areas?

Have you ever wondered what life was like in the early 50s, 60s and 70s?

Ethnic Heritage @ South West is a pilot programme by the South West Community Development Council to connect the community with the district’s rich heritage. As part of continuous efforts to create a vibrant South West District, community stakeholders, which include schools and grassroots organisations, have in the past months been researching and uncovering intriguing bits of the district’s heritage.

Come and learn more at the launch of Ethnic Heritage @ South West on 24 August 2007. You can expect to see exhibitions, interactive presentations, and many interesting materials and artefacts.


Launch of Ethnic Heritage @ South West                  

                   Date: Friday, 24 August
                   Venue: Singapore Discovery Centre
                   Time:  3pm -6pm           

Highlights of the launch include:
    i. Launch of Digital Map
    An interactive map on the heritage on South West CDC Website, based on the students’ research findings;
    ii. Screening of “Diminishing Memories”
    An exclusive screening of the internationally acclaimed documentary “Diminishing Memories” to connect the community with its heritage; and
    iii. Talk with prominent personalities :
    A narrative programme by veterans and key community leaders on the past, present and future heritage in South West District, including Dr Tan Cheng Bock, Mrs Ivy Singh- Lim, Ms Eng Yee Peng.

 
Organised Visits:

Organised Visits with discounted ticket price are most welcome:
$4 per adult; $1 per child (U.P. $15 per adult; $10 per child) inclusive of tickets for 3-D Movies. Bookings can be made via booking forms or through Residents Committee Centres and Community Club/Community Centres in the South West District.Click here for the programme on 25 & 26 August 2007.
Objectives of Ethnic Heritage @ South West

    i.    To uncover and discover the heritage among ethnic groups living in the South West District;
    ii.    To provide opportunities for youths to acquire and enhance lifelong skills through primary research on heritage, in support of the “Teach Less, Learn More” concept; and
    iii.   To strengthen bonding and belonging among youths and the community, i.e. grassroots organisations, as part of experiential learning.

Working Partners

2          The project involves combined community efforts from various partners to encourage community ownership of the project.
    i. National Heritage Board    The National Heritage Board (NHB) is the lead agency, working closely with schools to provide expert guidance and training     for the youths.
    ii. Grassroots Organisations (GROs)     The Grassroots Organisations assist the youths in their research at the ground level pertaining to contacts of persons, and stories for oral history and artefacts.

Implementation

3          Implementation of the project involves primary and secondary research by schools and other community organisations.
    i. Schools
    Six secondary schools have formed eight teams of 10 youths each to research in areas such as recreational lifestyle, medical resources and  religious places in South West District.
    ii. GROs, Self-Help Groups and Ethnic Based or Religious Organisations
    Residents and community leaders would be providing resources such as interviewees and artefacts.
