"MY SCHOOL SHINES”
|
“My School Shines” (MSS) programme - an extension of the “My Environment Shines” (MES) Programme that had been rolled out to all 16 divisions of South West District – was launched on 21 March 2007 by Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District at Tanglin Secondary School.
In line with the MES programme, the MSS programme consists of three modules addressing the three (3) public health goals of South West District - “A Litter-Free Environment”, “Clean, Dry and Sparkling Public Toilets” and “A Community That Does Not Spread Bugs”.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of My School Shines @ South West are to educate and instil the importance of public responsibility to our environment in children and youths aged seven (7) to 18 through mainstream education.
TARGET GROUP
More than 30,000 students from over 20 schools within the South West District are taking part in the MSS programme. Each school is commiting 40 Junior Environment Ambassadors (JEAs) to be trained under the South West CDC’s JEA programme.
HIGHLIGHTS
(a) My School Shines @ South West Pledge Tank
A specially designed My School Shines @ South West pledge tank will be roving to schools in the South West District to raise awareness and for students to pledge the commitment for the environment.
(b) No Cleaners’ Week - Internal Audit
Statistics from the NEA has show an increase in the Litter Bugs caught last year in compared to 2005, ie. 858 - 2006 and 661 – 2005, youths are the culprit. Therefore, South West CDC is partnering Environmental Challenge Community (ECO) to introduce “No Cleaners’ Week”. As with all auditing practices, there will be the necessary preparation for the internal audit (IA).
(c) My School Shines @ South West Activities
(i) “Clean, Dry and Sparkling Public Toilets”
The purpose of the activity is to decorate the toilet by putting up a poster on good toilet to inculcate a sense of ownership and responsibility. If you take notice, Tanglin Secondary School has chosen recyclables and DIY to decorate their toilets. Schools are also encouraged to use thimble on taps to minimise water wastage.
(ii) “A Community That Does Not Spread Bugs”
Plants are usually bought to beautify an event and usually thrown away
after the event. Tanglin Secondary School has ingeniously created a
“home” for the discarded and unwanted plants.
