An IT Programme for Needy Family with Schooling Children
____________________________________________

FACT SHEET

INTRODUCTION

Project GAPc (Giving Away Personal Computers) @ South West was incepted in FY2006 for needy families with schooling children to own personal computers (PCs) as well as to learn basic IT skills as a family. The objectives of Project GAPc @ South West are:

•  To narrow the digital gap among our needy families with schooling children;

•  To inculcate basic IT knowledge to parents as means to assist or monitor their children school work; and

•  To enhance job preparation capabilities.

HIGHLIGHTS

•  Basic IT Skills for Parents & Children.

Parents will be taught basic IT skills such as operating a computer, simple office programme as well as internet. This is essential as it helps to bridge the digital understanding between parents and child and enhance the employability skills. It is compulsory for the parent and applicant to attend the 1 ½ non-residential camp at ITE College West.

•  Techno drama – The Misadventures of Boon

Promote mass awareness of social responsibility in Internet that uses interactive media presentation. It is significant since the families will be given internet connection and being a newbie, the parents may not be aware of any misleading sites that are ideal for their children.

•  Project GAPc Cyber-parents Kit

Each family will be presented with Project GAPc Cyber-parents Kit comprising informative details that help parents to understand the dangers that exist online and guide their children to use computer technology responsibly.

•  Project GAPc @ South West Alumni

All Project GAPc @ South West beneficiaries will be appointed to be part of the Alumni, of which, families will be informed of IT developments through new media and each family (FY2008/09) will be given $30 worth of learning vouchers that can be used at South West District eClubs to continue upgrade themselves in IT literacy.
